Edited Highlights

The last two weeks have seen me in something close to perpetual motion, but what stays with me are a few moments of stillness. Looking at spiderwebs in my garden one morning:

Taking five minutes to have a shower at my parents' house, and appreciating the view (I do like a shower with a view):

Walking in the Lake District on a beautiful sunny autumn day:

Edinburgh is a visual feast, with its beautiful buildings, alleys, bridges, castle and hills, but I didn't take my camera. My strongest memory is walking over the bridge where Inverleith Row crosses the Water of Leith. I glanced over the parapet at the river. To my surprise, only a few yards away, standing in the water was a grey heron. Seeing this beautiful wild creature in the middle of the city was an astonishing experience.

Another good moment was when I hit 50K on the novel yesterday. Halfway!

Mr H. has just had a couple of days in Edinburgh and was saying how lovely it is; planning a trip in the new year.

And the Lake District is one of our favourite places too :-) we've had a timeshare in Langdale for 26 years, almost a 2nd home!

A heron raced me to work on a cycle path in inner-city Manchester a few weeks ago. Cycled right alongside me. Lovely. Surprisingly common in cities, I hear.

Lovely pictures, lovely descriptions of moments. I too have been busy-busy-busy. Was just reading the Twitter feed of a childless person with a lot more money and time than me, and marvelled at the difference in our lives. Lazy Sunday mornings, expensive purchases, etc. Hard to imagine life being like that. Retirement, maybe... (well, for time anyway; not money).

50k is a marvellous milestone. Well done!

Don't talk to me about herons - I haven't been able to eat fish since I saw the tail of my favourite pond fish disappearing down a heron's gullet. We have a net over the pond now, but herons still have a menacing quality to me.

50K hooray!! And I love the pictures. I never think about how beautiful spider webs are when I run into one, or sweep it out of a corner in my house, but seeing them in a photograph is a different matter entirely.

Debs, whereabouts are you visiting in Scotland?

I wonder whether being surrounded by beauty has helped to hit that amazing 50K milestone - your world does seem to have been particularly wondrous lately.
